Hanging vs. Rolling: How to Store Your Ties

Does this sound familiar? You come home from work or an event that required a tie, you pull that slightly uncomfortable item off your neck, then throw it in a drawer? How. Dare. You. There are much better ways to store your ties!

The two most common methods involve rolling or hanging the ties, and both options have their pros and cons. Deciphering between hanging versus rolling and how to store your ties can be a little challenging at first. Don’t fret; we’ve got you covered in our guide below.

In the words of Chevy Chase—roll ’em up

Rolling ties is a relatively new way of storing ties, but it totally works if you do it right. Just make sure you’re not tightly rolling the tie—we’re not practicing a ranger roll. A tightly rolled necktie is only going to cause more creases and wrinkles which never look good. Instead, loosely roll the tie to minimize the wrinkles, and your ties will say thank you. Seriously, try it––it’s super creepy.

Now, it’s important to note the pros and cons of rolling your ties. Let's start with the pros: You’ll save space in your closet, and if we’re being honest, opening a drawer of rolled ties is pretty awesome. The biggest con is that you’re losing drawer space, so if you need drawer space, maybe consider hanging your ties.

Some ties just want to hang

The time-honored method of storing ties is hanging them. Many of you probably grew up with a dad who had a hanger he draped all his ties from. Of course, you could use a standard hanger, or you could step it up a notch with a fancy tie ladder or our awesome 20 tie hanger.

The advantage of hanging your ties is simple––space efficiency; you’re going to free up that drawer space that you wouldn’t have otherwise. On the other hand, if you don’t hang each tie on its own hook, you run into the wrinkled tie problem again.

Gentlemen, your tie is something that communicates your personality and professionalism. Nothing screams confidence like a man in a suit and tie. So, is hanging or rolling your ties better? The answer is, both! As long as you follow our guide and hang or roll the tie correctly, you’ll be in good shape.
